Southwestern Community Services Receives Grant

Southwestern Community Services (SCS) is pleased to announce that the Northeast Delta Dental Foundation has granted $25,000 in support of the WIC Dental Project. The mission of the project is to improve the oral health of women and children enrolled in NH WIC and to demonstrate that paying for preventative dental care is less expensive and more effective than dental care after problems have occurred and been identified.

The project is a collaborative effort to make dental care more accessible for low-income women and children through a partnership with the State of NH Division of Public Health Services, NH Medicaid and the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program. WIC is the nation’s most successful and cost-effective public health nutrition program. WIC provides wholesome food, nutrition education and community support for income eligible women who are pregnant, new moms, infants and children up to five years old.

Since 2014, the HNH Foundation, the Jessie B. Cox Foundation, the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, and the Northeast Delta Dental Foundation have funded the WIC “Pay for Prevention Project”. This is a partnership between the New Hampshire DPHS Oral Health Program, public health dental hygienists, and WIC staff in Concord and Keene. The project provides on-site preventive dental services to WIC enrolled pregnant women and children.

Other funding has also been provided by the Monadnock United Way and the Keene Kiwanis Club’s Success By Six committee. Since 2014, over 2400 women, infants and children have received an oral health screening at a WIC site. On-site preventive oral health services have included oral health screening, risk assessments, oral health education, application of fluoride varnish, silver diamine fluoride (SDF), sealants and interim therapeutic restorations (ITR). Referrals are made to local dentists to treat urgent and other restorative needs as well as to establish a “dental home”.
